Improvements to Software Timeline

We rebuilt the software timeline on the same modern foundation as business timelines and shipped every improvement at once. Your timeline now shows all your work, lets you update it in place, and gives you the filtering, sprint views, and bulk actions that have been missing.

How it works

1. See all your work, including subtasks

We’re excited to share that every work item now shows on the timeline, including subtasks and standalone items that don't belong to an epic – so you can see the full picture of what your team is working on without clicking into individual items to find what’s underneath. If the view gets noisy, you can toggle standalone items off, or adjust hierarchy levels to show only the fidelity you need.

2. Edit without leaving

Status and assignee now appear as their own field columns, so you can update them directly on the timeline row. Change a status, reassign a work item, update a summary, all without opening the work item. You can also create standalone work items at different levels inline without leaving the timeline.

3. Filter and find what matters

The timeline now supports a more versatile field filtering experience with the new filter. When you filter, results display in a flat layout but still respect your filter: only matching items appear and hierarchical context will be shown in a separate modal, so you keep the big picture while focused on a slice of work.

4. Plan around sprints and releases

If your team uses sprints, you can now view the timeline by sprint with release markers, so you can see how work maps to your cadence without switching to a different view. Drag items to reschedule them, create new work directly on the timeline at any level, and see how everything fits together in the context of your actual planning cycle.

6. Bulk-update across work items

Select multiple work items and update fields in one go – you can reassign, change status, or transition a batch across different hierarchy levels.

7. Color bars help you spot patterns fast

Color your timeline bars by status category (To-do, In progress, Done) or by epic color. It’s a small visual change but makes a big difference when you’re scanning a timeline with a lot of work. You can immediately see what’s blocked, what’s in progress, and what’s done without going work item by work item.

How to get started

The next time you open Timeline in a software space, you'll see the updated experience. Your existing work items, sprint configuration, and view preferences carry over.

For admins: This is an automatic migration for software timelines across all Jira Cloud plans. View settings have moved from space/board settings into a consolidated panel on the timeline itself. The 5,000 work item limit has been removed. No admin action is required.
