Stop exporting and start calculating in Jira
Teams routinely need calculated data on their work items – budget variance, ROI, risk scores, days until a due date, effort remaining — so they can plan, prioritize, and report without leaving the tool. Today, the most common workarounds are exporting to spreadsheets or building brittle automation rules using smart values.
Formula fields are a new custom field type that brings live calculations (budgets, risk scores, deadlines) directly onto your Jira work items. The answer is already there when you open the work item. No exports, no wrangling, no "what's the latest number?"
How it works
Define formulas in plain language with AI assistance
You shouldn't need a data science degree to answer "are we over budget?" Just describe what you want to calculate — "show me budget remaining" or "days until the due date" — and Rovo writes the formula for you. If the result isn't quite right, ask Rovo to fix or adjust it, again in plain language. No syntax guides, no trial and error.
Calculate across numbers, text, dates, and durations
Every team measures work differently and formula fields are built to keep up. With four output types, you can surface almost any calculated value directly on your work items:
Numbers: budget variance, remaining effort, ROI
Text: conditional labels like "overdue," "on track," or "at risk" that update automatically as values change
Date: calculated due dates derived from creation date, priority, or any other field
Duration: time between two dates in weeks, days, or hours, so you always know how long something took or how much runway is left
If you can describe it, you can calculate it.
Connect your calculations to the rest of Jira
Formula results aren't just numbers on a screen — they're first-class data in Jira. Search and sort by formula values in JQL, pull them into dashboards, and use them to trigger automation rules. That means your calculated budget variance can automatically flag a work item as "at risk," or your RICE score (Reach × Impact × Confidence ÷ Effort) can power a filter that automatically surfaces your highest-priority backlog items. Your math works everywhere your team already works. Formula field values are also indexed by Rovo so your RICE scores, risk ratings, and budget figures become structured inputs that power AI-driven prioritization, summarization, and automated reporting.
Built for teams that need to scale
Create a formula field once and roll it out across your entire organization — no rebuilding the same setup project by project. Admins can scope fields to specific spaces or apply them globally, with full governance and audit trails built in. Available across both team-managed and company-managed projects, so every team gets the same trusted, consistent data no matter how they work. Unlike static formula fields in other tools, Jira connects your calculations directly to Rovo and the full platform so your formula outputs power AI-driven prioritization, automation rules, and JQL searches.

FAQs
Question | Answer |
|---|---|
Does this work in company-managed projects? | Yes. Formula Fields is available in both team-managed and company-managed projects. Admins can create global formula fields via the Custom Field Manager and scope them per-space or across all spaces. |
Do I need to know formula syntax? | No. You can describe your calculation in plain language and Rovo will write the formula for you. You can also edit or fix formulas using natural language. |
Can I search and sort by formula values? | Yes. Formula field values are indexed and fully searchable/sortable in JQL — for example, "Budget Remaining" < 0 to find over-budget items. |
Will this change my existing workflows? | No, formula fields are additive. It's a new custom field type that doesn't replace or modify any existing fields or automations. |
